Kydex or Leather? To be, or not to be?

One of the most common questions people have when they start carrying inside the waistband is whether they should choose a Kydex or leather holster. The truth is both can work well, but each has strengths and weaknesses depending on your needs and lifestyle.

Kydex holsters have become extremely popular because they are durable, lightweight, and hold their shape no matter the weather conditions. They typically provide a very solid “click” retention when holstering your pistol and allow for a fast, consistent draw. Since Kydex doesn’t soften over time, it also helps keep the trigger guard protected even after years of use. The downside is some people find them less comfortable against the body, especially during long periods of carry, sweating in hot weather, and cheaper models can dig into your side or create hot spots.

Leather holsters, on the other hand, are known for comfort. A quality leather holster tends to mold to your body over time and can feel more natural during all-day carry. Many people also appreciate the classic look and feel of leather. However, leather can soften and wear over time, especially with sweat and moisture exposure. Some leather holsters may collapse slightly after drawing the firearm, making re-holstering more difficult or less safe if the holster mouth is not reinforced.

At the end of the day, the “best” holster is the one that safely secures your firearm, protects the trigger, allows a consistent draw, and is comfortable enough that you will actually carry it regularly. No matter which style you choose, spend time training with it and make sure it works well with your body type, clothing, and daily activities.
